Six militants killed in two encounters in Jammu and Kashmir

Four militants were killed in Arwani operation in Anantnag district while two ultras were eliminated in an encounter at Kreeri in Baramulla.

SRINAGAR: Six militants were killed in two separate gunfights with security forces in strife-torn Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. A police official said acting on information that a large group of militants was hiding in Kharpora area of Arwani in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, police, CRPF and army men laid siege around the area in the afternoon and launched search operations.

He said as the security men were conducting searches, they came under heavy fire from militants hiding in some residential areas. The fire was returned by the troops, triggering a gunfight, he said."In the ensuing gunfight, four militants were killed," the official said.

The operation was going on when reports last poured in.The identity of the deceased militants and the outfit to which they owe allegiance was being ascertained.Sources said the local youth took to roads immediately after the gunfight erupted and attempted to march towards the encounter site to pave way for militants to escape.

However, the protestors were intercepted by the security personnel, who fired tear smoke shells and pellets to disperse them.Sources said the clashes and operation was going on when reports last poured in.Another gunfight broke out between militants and security forces at at Athoora area of Kreeri in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

A police official said gunfight started early morning after militants hiding in the area fired on security forces, who were laying siege around the area to track down the militants hiding there.He said militants were told through public address system to surrender and lay down weapons."When they continued the firing, security men retaliated. And in the ensuing gunfight, which continued for about four hours, two Lashkar militants were killed," he said.

The official said identity of the deceased militants was being ascertained."An AK rifle and an Insas rifle was recovered from the deceased militants," he added.
