KOLKATA: A couple allegedly 'killed' their 18-days-daughter suffering from pneumonia by not treating her as she was their second daughter.

Couple Sanjay and Madhabi Mandal of Uttar Kalikapur village in Dakshin Barasat of West Bengal have a two-year-old daughter and gave birth to their second daughter eighteen days ago. A few days after her birth, the newborn started suffering from pneumonia.

Locals alleged that the duo did not take the newborn to a doctor despite her suffering as they were depressed over the birth of a second daughter. When the newborn died after days of suffering, the couple allegedly buried her beside a canal. After stench emanated from the canal and neighbours noticed the absence of the child's cries, they suspected foul play and demanded answers from the couple who at first did not reveal anything but soon confessed their crime.

The locals informed the police who found the dead body and sent it for an autopsy. However, after the couple's confession with the locals, the accused couple fled the area. A manhunt has been initiated for the duo.
