BENGALURU: Executive Chairperson of Biocon Limited, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a tweet on Monday night, she said, "I have added to the COVID count by testing positive. Mild symptoms and I hope it stays that way."

Citizens and public figures poured in comments, wishing for her speedy recovery. These include MLA RV Deshapande, MP Shashi Tharoor, film director Shekhar Kapur, Chairman of Mahindra group, Anand Mahindra, MLA KJ George, former CM Vasundhara Raje, WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan among others.

In July, Biocon received approval from Drugs Controller General of India for restricted use of its drug, Itolizumab, for the treatment of moderate to severe COVID-19 patients.

Permission was given to market the drug for the treatment of cytokine storm, which takes place in the body as a response to coronavirus infection.

However, later that same month, the national COVID-19 task force decided against use of this drug in clinical management protocol for corona positive patients, citing insufficient evidence.
