JAIPUR: A day after Congress veteran Capt. Amarinder Singh resigned as the Punjab chief minister, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot implored him to think about the party's interests and not do anything that may damage it.

On Sunday, Gehlot advised Singh to not take any drastic steps that will harm the party's reputation.

In a series of tweets, he said that Singh had served the people of Punjab by working with full potential.
According to the party sources, Gehlot is one of the oldest and trusted leaders of the Congress whose stature is that of significant importance. In situations like these, the grand old party puts Gehlot forward for damage control.

"I hope that Captain Amarinder Singh will not take any such step, which will harm the Congress party. The Captain himself has said that the party kept him as the Chief Minister for 9 and a half years. During this, he has served the people of Punjab by working with his full potential," Gehlot wrote.

He further mentioned that the high command has to take the decisions in the interest of the party on the basis of the feedback received from the legislators and the general public.

Gehlot urged Amarinder to listen to the voice of his conscience and think in the interest of the country. "Many times it happens that when a Chief Minister is changed, he gets angry with the decision of the high command and starts blaming them. At that time one should listen to the voice of the inner soul," he wrote.

The Rajasthan chief minister also wrote about the direction the country is taking due to the "fascist forces and that it should be a mattern of concern for all the people. He added that at such a time, it is the responsibility of all Congressmen to rise above their own interests and think of the party and the country."

It is a matter of time if Amarinder will give heed to his colleague's advice. Observers believe that much will depend on who will take Singh's place to become the chief minister of Punjab.
