CUTTACK: Two of a family died and more than 15 persons including women and children were taken ill after consuming stale ‘Dahi Bara and Aloo Dum’ at Jharkata and Patana villages under Cuttack Sadar block here on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Bidyut Lata Das (60) and her son Brijesh Das (30) of Patana. While Bidyut Lata’s husband Narayan Das is battling for life at private hospital here, the rest 14 affected persons are undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.  
Sources said 17 persons of 8 families of both the villages had eaten the street food from a local eatery on Saturday. However in the night, all the 17 developed gastroenteritis and were rushed to Bentakar CHC and later shifted to SCBMCH after their condition deteriorated.
Bidyut Lata died at SCBMCH at about 2 pm on Sunday. Brijesh, who had been shifted from SCBMCH to a private hospital, died at about 1 pm on Monday. SCBMCH sources said of the 14 persons undergoing treatment, 11 have been admitted to the Diarrhoea ward while the rest three are in Pediatric ward. Their condition is stated to be stable.
Contacted, Medical Officer-In-Charge of Bentakar CHC Dr Ranjan Kumar Singh said the incident was a result of food poisoning due to consumption of stale ‘Dahi Bara and Aloo Dum’.   
Meanwhile, Health Department officials have rushed to the villages and started chlorination of the affected localities.  Besides conducting a health camp, the officials have also collected water and food samples from the affected areas for examination, said CDMO, Cuttack Dr Gangadhar Paramguru.
