BARIPADA:Residents of a tribal village in Mayurbhanj district caught hold of three persons allegedly involved in a gang-rape and gave them a sound thrashing before handing them over to police on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Mahuldiha village within Thakurmunda police limits. The three accused are Salkhan Soren (30), Ramdas Soren (26) and Rashain Samad (30), all residents of Ashankud village. A country-made gun was seized from Ramdas.

Sources said Salkhan and his two associates went to Lalmohan Badra’s house in Mahuldiha at around 2 am. Before entering, they disconnected the power supply to the house. In the darkness, the trio tiptoed into the house where Lalmohan's widowed daughter was sleeping along with other family members. They then took the widow to the cowshed where Salkhan raped her while Ramdas and Rashain kept a watch.
In the meantime, Lalmohan woke up and on finding his daughter missing, came out of the house in search of her.  He found Salkhan sexually assaulting his daughter in the cowshed. As Lalmohan screamed for help, neighbours rushed to the cowshed and caught hold of Salkhan, Ramdas and Rashain, suspecting them to be child lifters.

The angry villagers then tied the trio and thrashed them. Salkhan admitted that he raped the widow while the other two supported him in the act. The trio was handed over to Thakurmunda police in the morning.
Police said the three accused were arrested on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim and did not rule out love angle in the incident. A case under Sections 376 (D) and 25 Arms Act has been registered. The accused will be produced in court on Thursday and investigation is on, the police added.
