DEOGARH:As campaign for by-election to two Wards of Deogarh Municipality, scheduled on August 4, gathers steam, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to make its presence felt in the urban local body where it has no representation.

In the erstwhile 11-member Municipal Council, the BJD had nine members while two were from Congress with no representation of BJP. However, BJD councillor of Ward 1 Chandrasekhar Bhukta was disqualified and Congress councillor of Ward 9 Dharmendra Debata resigned to contest the Zilla Parishad poll, thereby necessitating the by-election to both the Wards.
While a direct fight between BJD and BJP is expected in Ward 1 where Congress has a little presence, a triangular contest between BJD, BJP and Congress is on the cards in Ward 9. In Ward 1, BJD has fielded Ahimsa Nayak while BJP and Congress have nominated Roshad Behera and Khema Sahu as candidates for the by-polls.

Similarly, Kulachandrama Hasti is the BJD candidate in Ward 9 while BJP has fielded Rajkumar Munda and Congress Kumari Kerketta.Meanwhile, all eyes are set on Ward 1 where BJD is working relentlessly to deny the BJP a seat in the Municipal Council after losing out in the Zilla Parishad poll. The ruling party workers are highlighting the failure of BJP MLA and erstwhile ruler of Deogarh Nitesh Gangdeb to develop the area and are urging voters to repose their confidence in BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Though both the parties are equally placed at the moment, Gangdeb on his part is also campaigning hard to end the winning streak of BJD and ensure victory for the saffron party. He is being supported by former BJP MLA Subash Panigrahi and district BJP president Arun Sahu.
On the other hand, the BJD campaign is being managed by former ministers Prashant Nanda, Sanjib Sahu, Sarada Nayak, State working president of BYJD Sanjit Mohanty besides the Councillors of the Municipality led by Chairperson Anita Patra.
