Tura (Meghalaya), Oct 14 (PTI) A timber bridge overthe Simsang river in South Garo Hills district collapsed inthe heavy overnight rain.
Unseasonal heavy overnight rain led to a surge inwater levels of the Simsang leading to the collapse of thebridge, made of wood and which is more than 50 meters inlength, official sources said.
The bridge connects the entire Nongalbibra and Sijuarea in Baghmara.
Local MLA, Rophul S Marak of Rongara-Siju stated thathe was doing his utmost to ensure quick repair of the bridgeonce water levels came down.
"The bridge is the lifeline of the people in thedistrict and will affect everyone who lives on both sides ofthe river. I have spoken to the concerned departments and theyhave provided an assurance of starting bridge repairsimmediately after the lowering of water levels," said Marak,when contacted over phone.
