New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The conjoined twins from Odisha-- Jaga and Kalia -- whose heads were separated on October 26at the AIIMS here, continue to be in the ICU but theircondition is stated to be stable.

Dr A K Mahapatra, the chief of the neurosciences centreat the AIIMS said, the craniopagus conjoined twins fromKandhamal district are in the ICU and their condition is beingmonitored by a team of experts round the clock.

Blood is being transfused in them and their condition isstable, the doctor told PTI.

Dr Deepak Kumar Gupta, neurosurgeon at the AIIMS, who ledthe surgery along with Dr Mahapatra, said Jaga is onintermittent hemodialysis and his kidney functioning isimproving.

"One of twins is on intermittent hemodialysis which meanshe is undergoing dialysis once a day. His kidney functioningis improving but his heart functioning is still low," Dr Guptasaid.

The vital parameters of Kalia is normal, but he is yet togain consciousness, the doctor said, adding, "He is underobservation."The two-years-five-months old twins were separatedfollowing a 16-hour-long surgery at the AIIMS here. A team ofaround 30 specialists from the institute's neurosurgery,neuro-anaesthesia and plastic surgery departments performedthe marathon surgery.

AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria had earlier said thatthough the twins have been separated, the next 18 days wouldbe extremely critical to ascertain the success of the surgery.

The team of doctors involved in the procedure also hadexpressed concern about the survival of one of the twins.

The first phase of the surgery was performed on August 28when the doctors created a venous bypass to separate the veinsshared by the babies that return blood to the heart from thebrain.

The twins were admitted to AIIMS on July 13.

Dr Deepak Gupta had earlier said the condition, which thetwins suffered from, afflicted one in 30 lakh children, ofwhich 50 per cent die either at birth or within 24 hours.

In this country, two similar surgeries had taken placeearlier to separate twins joined at the head but were notsuccessful as the children died during the procedure. PTI PLBNSD.
