Mumbai, Oct 30 (PTI) The government wants doctors toprescribe cheaper generic drugs which will be available at theJan Aushadhi stores across the country.

The government will soon add around 300 more JanAushadhi stores, to take their numbers to around 3,000 byDecember.

"Generic drugs for one and all are the need of thehour and we are glad to begin the same in Maharashtra. Thiswill be a revolutionary step in healthcare and we will alsourge doctors to prescribe generic drugs. This will help peoplesave money and bring relief to them," Union Minister of Statefor Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale said atworkshop on Jan Aushdhi here today.

Under the 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana', atotal of 3,000 stores will be opened by December this year,which will provide quality drugs at affordable prices, theminister said.

Addressing the event, Bureau of Pharma PSUs ofIndia (BPPI) chief executive Biplab Chatterjee said, "we areseeking application for setting up of more Jan Aushadhi'Kendras' across the country."At present, about 2,700 Jan Aushadhi 'Kendras' areproviding affordable medicines to the people. These stores arein 426 districts across 30 states and Union territories. Only80 centers were opened between 2008 and 2014. PTI AP BENNRB.
