While the Theni case pertains to ganja possession, the case in Tiruchy is for Shankar’s alleged comment derogating women police officials on social media.
Shankar (48) was arrested by the Coimbatore Police from southern Theni on May 4 for alleged derogatory statements about women police personnel and some Madras High Court judges in an interview.
The bench observed that solitary confinement was not warranted, prompting Tamil Nadu's standing counsel to clarify that Shankar was not in solitary confinement.
Advocate Balaji Srinivasan appearing for A Kamala, mother of Shankar, said that the YouTuber had been subjected to physical torture and solitary confinement.
Earlier the apex court had granted Shankar the relief against his preventive detention and ordered his release till the Madras High Court decides the plea against his preventive detention.
