CHENNAI:  By winning two of his three semifinal league matches, Lalrina Renthlei bagged the National junior snooker title here on Wednesday. En route to winning the title, he accounted for Himanshu Jain and Mundir Sherazi,  but lost to MK Lakshman.

First up, he cut a frame deficit to beat Mundir 39-59, 65-57, 58-17 and 65-46. Starting off on a positive note against Himanshu, he conjured a break of 52 to clinch the opening frame 71-17. Though he lost the second 18-65,  he took the third and fourth 75-36 and 73-19 to clinch the match.

Though he lost the third match to Lakshman, it didn’t affect his title prospects. Lakshman squandered far too many opportunities for his own liking, and found himself conceding the opening frame 85-18. Lifting himself up after an early deficit in the second, he held onto wrap the second 74-47.

The sprightly Mizo, meanwhile, recovered from a bout of hyper-aggression that cost him the second frame. He was his tranquil self, potting with finesse and a certain degree of forethought. Another massive frame score of 84-28 lent him a redoubtable edge, only to wither away as Lakshman threw caution to the wind, and under pressure Renthlei’s game wilted, warranting the decider. Renthlei had his moments of sparkle, and stutter. Leading 41-36, he spilled the black, wherein his opponent chipped in with points. Agonisingly, he missed three more, denting his morale and chance. Lakshman wasn’t to be afforded a second hit, as he romped in 68-41.

But as Himanshu had conceded two frames to Sherazi, Renthlei was adjudged winner on account of frame difference (Renthlei’s was +3 and Himanshu’s +2).

Though the verdict was out before the match between Himanshu and Sherazi was sealed, the former exhibited aggression, hitherto inconspicuous, to sweep off Sherazi.
