National Boxing championship: Surender moves into 2nd round

It was a sweet moment for K Surender of Andhra Pradesh, a sugarcane vendor, when he stormed into the second round of the men’s welterweight category (69 kg) in the 59th Senior National Boxing championship at Lal Bahadur Stadium on Wednesday. The  23-year-old pugilist pounded Goa’s Vivek Sidar before the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

With boxing being his passion, Surender, who lost his father, found hard to meet both the ends before finally finding a compromise formula. He would train under Steven and Omkar Yadav at Nizam College in the morning till 11 am before rushing to Koti, a distance of 3 kms, to do his business. “Initially, I found it difficult but I knew that if I wanted to pursue my dream of boxing in big meets, I had to make some sacrifices,’’ said Surender, a bronze medal winner in the National School Games in 2007.

Today, he warmed the cockles with a good display of aggressive boxing. The match which got delayed by five minutes because the State Coach Omkar Yadav was busy at the other ring, saw Surender dominating the bout. He took a 8-3 lead in the first round and then went up 15-7 lead in the second. The nimble-footed Surender unleashed series of punches on Sidar in the third round forcing the referee to stop the contest.
