Chakravarthy wins chess tourney

Chakravarthy Reddy of Andhra Pradesh won the 6th Modern School International Fide Rating Chess Championship (below 2200 rating) held at Modern Senior Secondary School, Nanganallur.

Chakravarthy secured nine points out of 10 and with better tie-break score was declared the winner. In the last round, with his tenacious play he averted defeat against the lesser rated Kumar in a complicated middle game. Chakravarthy got a trophy and Rs 25,000. Akash Iyer also scored nine points to finish runner-up and received a cash prize of `18,000. Five players – K Anshuman, Prajesh R, Kumar S, Rakesh Kumar Jena and Hirthickkesh Pr – scored eight points each and on tie-break, finished third to seventh, respectively.

DV Sundar, vice-president of FIDE and V Hariharan, secretary, All India Chess Federation, gave away the prizes.

Loganathan Wins

R Loganathan of SIAA beat Prabhu of Gymkhana  9-6 in the quarterfinals of the Tamil Nadu 9 Ball Pool state ranking tournament.

School Football

The Fr. Mohanraj Memorial Trophy inter-school football tournament for junior boys will be held from August 7 to 10 at DBYC, Broadway. There are 14 teams in the tournament, which will be played on knock-out basis. In case a match ends in draw, the winner shall be decided by tie-breaker.

Course for Coaches

The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu Tennis Association is conducting an AITA Level 3 course for coaches corresponding to ITF Level 1 at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam.

The course will end on August 8. Twenty-nine participants (including 3 ladies) are participating in the in the course.

The course is being conducted by ITF level 2 tutors Sunil Yajaman and Suresh Kumar.
