Coach Pawar Gives Walkover to Disciple Arkale For Gold

Sharad Pawar, a wrestler from Latur 'gifted' the title bout to his disciple Jyotiba Arkale from Solapur in the 57 kg weight category in the championship last night.

NAGPUR: Setting an example of camaraderie and healthy relationship between a master and disciple, a wrestling coach virtually conceded his gold medal to his junior at the 59th edition of Maharashtra Kesari State Wrestling Championship here.

Sharad Pawar, a wrestler from Latur 'gifted' the title bout to his disciple Jyotiba Arkale from Solapur in the 57 kg weight category (dirt turf) in the championship last night.

In the final bout, Pawar gave a walkover to Arkale to the surprise of thousands of enthusiasts.

Pawar and Arkale both practice in Pune and the former coaches the latter.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, Pawar stunned defending champion Sagar Markad 5-0 in his weight category.

In the bronze medal match, Markad had defeated Kolhapur's Santosh Hirgud 11-0.

In the 65-kg weight dirt turf category, Solapur's Vasant Sarode thrashed Latur's Vasant Bhonsale 8-4 to clinch the gold medal.

The bronze medal went to Kiran More who outplayed Ram Kamble in the second round.

Sonba Gogane of Kolhapur stunned international wrestler from Pune, Suraj Kokate 12-4 to clinch the title in 61-kg mat category.
