India lead in Open section, women up to second position

CHENNAI: India jumped to top spot in the Open section of the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku on Thursday. B Adhiban’s win over Erwin L’Ami propelled the team to a 2.5-1.5 victory over Netherlands Round 6. India’s (12 match points) sixth straight victory is nothing short of sensational, and gave them a one-point lead over nearest rivals USA. Menawhile, D Harika and Soumya Swaminathan scored over Dana Reizniece-Ozola and Inguna Erneste as Indian women defeated Latvia 2.5-1.5 in the sixth round. India (10) leaped to the joint second spot.
