Gambhir not on field as play starts on day 5

Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who was in Delhi onthe fourth day of the first cricket Test against England after hisgrandmother's demise, was not on the field when play on the final day of the match commenced heretoday.

Gambhir "is on his way back", informed CricketBoard's media manager Vinod Deshpande but he could not say exactly when theplayer would reach the ground to rejoin his teammates.

According to other sources, the Delhi cricketer is scheduledto arrive in the city at 1:00pm and depart at 7:30pm.

Gambhir was substituted on the field by Ajinkya Rahane.

Gambhir cannot open the Indian second innings even if he hadtaken the field this morning as according to the laws of the game, he cannotcome in to bat till the fall of the fifth home wicket.

It remains to be seen who accompanies Virender Sehwag toopen the Indian second essay in place of Gambhir.
