Giles replaces Flower as England's ODI coach

Ashley Giles is replacing Andy Flower as head coachof England's limited-over cricket teams in a shake-up announced on Wednesday.

Former England spin bowler Giles is leaving his role ascoach at Warwickshire, which he led to the English County Championship title inSeptember, to take over the national one-day international and Twenty20 sides.

Flower, still in charge of the test side, will remain asteam director and continue to be responsible for the preparation and playingstrategies of all of the teams. But the change will take some of the pressureoff Flower, who has been in sole control of England's test, ODI and T20 sides.

"The change in structure will provide a more efficientand sustainable use of coaching resources, ensuring that both coaches have anopportunity to prepare thoroughly for each series as well as interacting moreregularly with other important areas of England cricket," the ECB said ina statement.

Giles will lead England on the limited-overs tours of Indianext month and New Zealand in February. Flower will take charge for the NewZealand leg of tests in March. Both remain as selectors.

Hugh Morris, managing director of England Cricket, saidGiles will be the perfect complement to Flower as England prepare for a busycouple of years of all forms of cricket, including home and away Ashes series.

"Ashley has had considerable success as aninternational player and is a highly respected coach, and the players andEngland management are looking forward to working with him," Morris said.

He paid tribute to Flower's contribution and said he"will continue to be responsible for the development and implementation ofthe strategies needed to ensure we continue to improve."

Meanwhile, Kevin Pietersen has been named in England'sone-day squad to face India in January but will not play England's two T20sagainst India before Christmas.

Pietersen announced his retirement from internationallimited-overs cricket six months ago, but has since reversed that decisionafter a difficult summer where he had contract wrangles with the ECB.

Alistair Cook retains the one-day captaincy for thefive-match series while Stuart Broad will lead the T20 side in a two-matchseries with Surrey pace bowler Stuart Meaker the only player included in thesquad not to have played a T20 for England.

The five-match ODI series begins on Jan. 11 in Rajkot.
