MUMBAI: Marco Materazzi was all arms and gestures in the first half. But as his team trudged towards defeat, the fiery Italian stood on the sidelines, arms folded, resigned to the result. Defending champions Chennayin FC have struggled to string together a consistent run this season and they were off-colour once again as they went down 0-2 to Mumbai City FC in an ISL game at Mumbai Football Arena.
Mumbai are the team in form currently. Having beaten Kerala Blasters 5-0 on Saturday, they produced another aggressive performance against Chennai to cement their place at the top of the leaderboard. The team which failed to make the semifinals in the previous two editions, became the first to make it to the playoffs with 22 points from 13 games.

Chennai are seventh in the eight-team League with 14 points from 12 matches.
Under former Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimares, Mumbai have come together as an astute attacking unit and the trio of Diego Forlan, Sunil Chhetri and Matias Defederico left Chennai chasing shadows on Wednesday. Defederico netted the opening goal in the 32nd minute, while Krisztian Vadocz scored the second in the 60th.

Defederico, the twinkle-footed Argentine, has brought flair to the team. Chhetri and Forlan’s experience and anticipation provide the requisite polish. Though the Indian joined the Mumbai camp late, he has fitted perfectly and his work ethic on the field means the team is never short on effort. After working for the first 30 minutes, Chhetri created the opening for Defederico to score with a deft pass.
Forlan, who scored a hat-trick against Kerala, provided the assist for Vadocz in the second half. He picked up a loose ball outside the box and crossed it to the Hungarian. Vadocz controlled the ball on the chest and unleashed it at the net.
