MELBOURNE: Melbourne City have signed Dutch defender Bart Schenkeveld on a two-year contract for the new Australian A-League season, the club said Monday.

Schenkeveld, 25, joins City from PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie.

"I'm delighted to become a Melbourne City player, starting in a new league and a totally new country," Schenkeveld said.

City's new English head coach Warren Joyce added: "Bart is a strong and versatile defender with five years of experience playing at the highest level in the Eredivisie."

Schenkeveld also had stints with Feyenoord, Excelsior and Heracles Almelo along with one appearance for the Dutch under-19 team.
