Double delight for Suresh in junior tennis

CHENNAI: Dhakshineswar Suresh of Tamil Nadu was in his element on Saturday as he won both the singles and doubles title at the 25th adidas-MCC junior national clay court championship held at the SDAT-Nungambakkam tennis stadium on Saturday. In the singles, Suresh defeated Abhimanyu Vannem Reddy of Delhi 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets. In the doubles match, Suresh combined well with Parikshit Somani and beat the pair of Vannem Reddy and Javia Dev 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. The ‘promising player’ award was given to Tanisha Kashyap of Assam in the girls segment, while Yeswanth Logonathan of Tamil Nadu bagged the same in the boys category. Akanksha A Bhan of Gujarat emerged champion in girls singles. She overcame Shivani Manjanna of Karnataka in the summit clash.

Girls: Yubrani Banerjee (WB)/Shivani Manjana (Kar) bt Singh Pringle (Ch)/ Kavya Sahwani (UP) 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.

Balaji scalps five Anirudh Balaji’s 5/36 enabled Thiruvallur gain a lead of 128 runs against Coimbatore in the drawn semifinal match of the TNCA inter-district U-14 tournament. Thiruvallur won on the basis of its first innings lead. Brief scores: Thiruvallur 272/9 in 90 ovs drew with Coimbatore 144 in 80.5 ovs (S Prajin 38; Anirudh Balaji 5/36).
