HYDERABAD: The Congress drew inspiration from the 19th-century British general and irrigation engineer, Sir Arthur Cotton, and took up the gigantic task of Jalayagnam for the well-being of small and medium farmers in the State, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah has said.

Commemorating the 206th birth anniversary of Cotton, who built the Dowleswaram barrage and turned the Godavari delta into the granary of South India, in his chambers in the Secrtariat today, Lakshmaiah said the State Government under the leadership of YS Rajasekhara Reddy had successfully completed 13 projects in the past five years in spite of several hurdles.

All the other projects too would be completed after the Congress returned to power and Rajasekhara Reddy was determined to complete the projects at any cost, Lakshmaiah said.

The minister approved the promotion of about 300 deputy engineers as executive engineers on the occasion.
