Sathya Sai Baba's gift to poor students

PUTTAPARTHI: As his birthday gift to poor students, Sri Sathya Sai Baba has announced the launch of Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vauhini Project in association with the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Under the project, poor students would be given study material and teachers would be trained to impart quality education with right human values, dedication and devotion.

Chairman of Tata group of companies Ratan Tata and TCS CEO Chandrasekharan handed over the software for the project to Sri Sathya Sai Baba here today.

Later, announcing the project on behalf of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, former vice-chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning SV Giri said the project would be implemented on a pilot basis in select villages in the next five to six months and later implemented all over the country. About 250 million children were not getting proper education and the proposed project aimed to fill the gap. This was the gift Sri Sathya Sai gave on his 85th birthday to people, he said.

External affairs minister S M Krishna described Sri Sathya Sai Baba as the modern Bhageeratha who gave drinking water to about 750 villages in Anantapur district, Chennai, East and West Godavari districts. Many reputed institutions like the Sri Sathya Sai Superspeciality Hospital in Bangalore were started by Sai Baba, he said.

Conveying his birthday greetings to Sai Baba, Krishna said during his recent visit to Singapore he found Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithies working there.

Governor E S L Narasimhan, while recalling several social service programmes launched by Sai Baba, said only he could do such works. Sai Baba won the hearts of the people with love and compassion and he was the incarnation of God, Narasimhan said. He urged Sai Baba to bless the seven crore people of the state.

Chennai mayor Subramanian recalled how Sai Baba came to the rescue of Chennai in 2002 by spending crores of rupees to supply drinking water from Kandaleru Reservoir to the city.

Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister M K Stalin wished Sai Baba on his birthday.

Later, Narasimha Reddy from Pottipadu village in Vajrakarur mandal, Suryanarayana Reddy from East Godavari district and Laxmanbhai Gnanender from Gujarat spoke commending the services rendered by Sai Baba.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, I&PR and tourism minister J Gita Reddy presented flowers to Sai Baba.
