HYDERABAD: Work in majority of government offices came to standstill following the strike called by the Joint Action Committee of employees, teachers and workers at Indira park on Tuesday. The Rangareddy district collectorate office which witnesses hectic activity around 1 p.m, wore a deserted look with just security guards standing at the main gate. They were seen sending away visitors who arrived there not aware of the strike. Many people who turned up from far-off places had to leave disappointed. Every day thousands of people visit the collectorate to clear their grievances like land related issues, student scholarships, SC/ST welfare schemes.

A group of college students visiting the office regularly to clear their scholarship file were angry. “We were asked to come back after a week when we last visited. But now the whole collectorate office is closed,” said Rajesh, a degree student who came all the way from Medchal.

All 35-odd sections in the collectorate remained closed on account of the strike.

Prior to their state-wide strike, all employees applied for leave just a day before. Some officials who tried to stay were taken away by union members while a few others remained in the office for about an hour and left. Situation at the Hyderabad collectorate was slightly different. A few contract employees were seen working along with some new employees, seen receiving new applications and directing them to appropriate sections.

But majority of visitors had to leave empty handed. “Its a dispute between employees and the government. But it is the common and poor people who are left to suffer,” said Mallamma, a resident of LB Nagar, who had come for ration card work.
