Former chief justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Prabha Shankar Mishra died here on Sunday morning after suffering a chronic kidney ailment. He was 76. Acting chief justice PC Ghose, judges and retired judges visited his house at Jubilee Hills and paid homage to him.
Mishra was born on August 6, 1936. He obtained master’s degree in science and Bachelor of Law from Patna University. He was a judge in the Patna and Madras High Courts and as the chief justice of the Andhra Pradesh and Calcutta High Courts. He was a senior advocate at the Supreme Court before his death. Mishra was on a company board of directors and served as chairman of the Investor Grievance Committee and was a member of the audit and remuneration committees of the company.
HC judge justice VVS Rao recalled his association with Mishra during his stint as chief justice of AP High Court. Mishra referred my name for appointment as a judge of the AP High court. When he was chief justice, I was a practising advocate. Mishra was the first chief justice of AP High Court to introduce judicial reforms. New court buildings were constructed and judges were provided proper facilities such as telephone at his instance,’’ he said. Another High Court judge, justice Grandhi Bhavani Prasad, said Mishra was a role model to the advocates and judges. After I came in contact with his family members, I wanted to invite him for the Justice BSA Swamy Memorial Function to be held in the city on July 29. Mishra’s wife invited me and my wife to their home to take his blessings,’’ said B.Sudhakar, son-in-law of the late justice BSA Swamy. Mishra will be cremated at the Punjagutta crematorium on Monday.
