The temple town of Tirumala was rife with rumours of custodial death on Tuesday after a young woman was found hanging in the bathroom at the Tirumala police station.

The police, however, maintained that the woman committed suicide by hanging herself with her dupatta. The victim, identified as Masthanamma (18), was earlier involved in a couple of petty cases on Tirumala. Police took her into custody on Monday when she was trying to pickpocket a pilgrim on the Hills and lodged her in the Tirumala police station.

But she was found hanging to the ceiling Tuesday morning.  Police shifted the body to SVR Ruia government general hospital for postmortem.

Tirupati Urban SP J Prabhakara Rao asserted that the victim had committed suicide, adding that the details would be known only after the postmortem report is released.

If anything is found fishy in her death, necessary action would be taken against those responsible, he added.
