Though the exact reason behind the death of a young woman Parvathi (18) in Tirumala police station on Tuesday was not known yet, the police claim that she committed suicide as her mother cautioned her against indulging in burglaries.
Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC), which claimed that it conducted a preliminary enquiry into the incident, alleged that the police harassment drove the girl to suicide.
Contrary to the police officials’ claims that they took the girl into custody on Monday, APCLC leaders said the police detained her on Saturday itself and harassed without producing her in the court the next day.
Demanding action against all those responsible for the suicide, the APCLC leaders sought compensation to the victim’s family.
