Civic polls: Government firm on BC quota

At its first sitting at the Secretariat here on Saturday, the cabinet sub-committee on local body elections  decided that the 34 per cent reservation for backward communities be provided in the local body elections too.

Speaking to Express, minister for BC welfare Baswaraj Saraiah said the government remained committed to the welfare of the BCs and would ensure that they continues to have the reservation in local body elections.

He said they decided to go to the Supreme Court on the cap placed on the total reservation in local body elections. ``If necessary, we will discuss the matter at a cabinet meeting and the chief minister will go to Delhi to take it up with the prime minister and press for a constitutional amendment, if necessary,'' he said.
