Underground Staircase Discovered at Temple

GUNTUR: A large number of people made a beeline to the Bheemeswara temple in Chebrolu in the district Wednesday as the news spread that a treasure trove might be found in the sub-terranean chambers of the shrine on whose premises an underground staircase was discovered.

According to sources, renovation works were being taken up for the last two days on the premises of the ancient temple which was built during the Chola dynasty. The underground staircase was found Tuesday while the workers were removing slush and soil around the temple. A wall across the staircase to prevent further entry of people was also found.

It is learnt that the officials may demolish the wall to see if there are subterranean chambers underneath the temple.
