TIRUPATI: Duped customers and agents of the Agrigold group of companies staged a massive protest near the RDO office here Monday and alleged that the government was backing the defaulting company and threatened the latter of dire consequences if their demands including refund of their money, were not met.
“Agitations throughout the state will continue if our demands for compensation to all the affected stakeholders of Agrigold companies by selling the latter’s properties, arrest of top officials of the company and setting up of an independent committee to look into the scam, are not met. We will also stage ‘rail roko’ and ‘road roko’ protests”, said G Seshagiri Rao, president of state Agrigold Agents and Customers Welfare Association.
He rued the government’s inaction in the massive scam in which over 45 lakh customers and 5 lakh agents of the company had lost around `10,000 cr. Moreover, the suicide by around 20 agents due to unsurmountable pressure from their customers, had aggravated the situation, he added. He blamed the police also for their inaction in the matter.
The protest, which was preceded by a rally from the MCT Office to the RDO office, was also supported by several leaders of political parties, including the left parties and the BJP.
MLC Yandapalli Srinivasulu Reddy and BJP leader Bhanu Prakash Reddy were among those who lent their support to the agitators.
