VISAKHAPATNAM: With the experimental re-engineering of Siripuram Junction being a success, the city traffic police are planning more such initiatives to ease traffic flow at other major junctions in the city. The Satyam Junction on the NH-16 is likely to be the next area to witness changes in road alignment works in the ensuing days, followed by the NAD.
The pilot project at the Siripuram Junction, diverting most of the traffic from the Dutt Island area has elicited good response from the motorists. Though there was initially confusion among the motorists on going round the road, noticing the seamless flow of traffic, the Siripuram Junction has become a no traffic snarls junction for the last one week.
The city police commissioner and the traffic heads are studying the response and are likely to make the project a permanent affair. The traffic department officials say that though at present there are no proposals for extending the project to other busy junctions, they will take up re-alignment works at the Satyam Junction in the near future after doing spade work. Traffic ADCP K Mahendra Patrudu, said, “Satyam Junction has got some issues like indifferent median lines and directions. So changes would be made to those first.” It may be recalled that the traffic police had implemented re-engineering works at the Maddilapalem, One Town area and a few other traffic congested areas by closing the gaps between the medians for smooth traffic.
NAD Proves Hard Nut to Crack
The police are finding it tough to find a solution for the traffic problem at the NAD Junction. Several institutions had studied the flow of traffic to identify solutions by diverting traffic a la Siripuram, but none of the studies was satisfactory to the traffic department. One of the senior cop said that though there were several proposals on the NAD traffic issue, they are not up to the expectations.
