HYDERABAD:The biennial election to fill up six vacancies in the Telangana Legislative Council and 4 vacancies in AP  Legislative Council will be held on June 1.

The Election Commission on Thursday issued schedule for the election of 4 MLC seats in AP and 6 MLC seats in Telangana from MLAs’ quota. As per the schedule, poll notification will be issued on May 14. Polling will be held on June 1 for all the seats.

In AP election will be held to fill one casual vacancy in the State Legislative Council due to the death of Paladugu Venkata Rao. Election will also be held to fill the newly-created three additional vacancies under MLAs’ quota under the provisions of the AP Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2015. That means, in total election will be held to fill four seats in the Upper House of AP from MLAs’ quota.

Biennial elections will be conducted for six MLC seats under MLAs’ quota in Telangana.  Of the seven MLC seats which were vacated on March 29, election will be held for six seats under MLAs’ quota. One seat vacated by KR Amos will not be filled up as the seat does not exist henceforth as per the recent amendment made to the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.

The Centre recently issued a notification removing the inconsistency in the number of MLC seats in Telangana in the AP Reorganisation Act. As per Section 23(1) of the AP Reorganisation Act, the number of seats in Telangana Legislative Council to be filled through election by MLAs has been fixed as 14. But, the 4th Schedule of the Act says that the number of MLCs are 15. That means, one seat is extra.

“The inconsistency was referred to the Central government. The ministry of home affairs has advised that on retirement of the seven MLCs, one seat vacated by KR Amos shall cease to exist and shall not be filled up,” the Election Commission said in its election schedule issued on Thursday.

So, elections will be held to fill up six vacancies instead of the seven vacancies. The term of MLCs in Telangana Legislative Council which will come to an end includes KR Amos, Nagapuri Rajalingam, Peer Shabbir Ahmed, Balasani Laxminarayana, Bodakunti Venkateswarlu, K Yadav Reddy and D Srinivas.
