Vizag Couple Found Dead in Colombo

VISAKHAPATNAM: A couple from Visakhapatnam allegedly committed suicide by consuming soft drink laced with poison at a hotel room in Colombo of Sri Lanka Wednesday night. The deceased have been identified as Prithviram (30), native of Srinagar area of Gajuwaka of the city, and N Mahalakshmi (27) of Chennai. The incident came to light when special branch police of the city received the information from Sri Lankan police Friday morning.

ACP (Special Branch) MRK Raju said that  Prithviram and Mahalakshmi were married a year ago. Prithviram was working in Malaysia and the couple settled there. A few days ago, the couple had left for Sri Lanka on tourist visa. Police said that the couple had visited the major tourist destinations in Colombo.

On Wednesday night, they returned to their hotel room and locked themselves in. As the duo didn’t respond to calls on Thursday, the hotel staff alerted the police. The police broke open the door and found the couple dead. A soft drink bottle was lying next to them. Police are suspecting that the couple had consumed the drink mixed with poison or other chemicals to end their lives and are yet to ascertain the reasons that led them to take the extreme step. The special branch police have intimated the bereaved family members, who have started for Sri Lanka.
