Residents Stir against Eviction Notice

VIJAYAWADA: The residents of Old Rajarajeswaripet in the city on Sunday launched ‘Save Our Homes’ agitation, following the eviction notices served by the railways to as many as 1,580 residential units, 15 days ago.

The houses were constructed on the land between two railway yards about 35 years ago. Now, the railways, as part of its expansion plans, wanted to take over the land, which, the officials say, is theirs.

“There is indeed some land belonging to the railways, but it has been nearly three-and-half decades that we have been living here. Now, the railways want to evacuate us,” averred Sk Afsar, one of the residents who was protesting the move taken by the railways.
