VISAKHAPATNAM: The Knowledge Resource Centre of GITAM University celebrated the World Book Day here Thursday by organising a discourse on the significance of reading and relevance of libraries for knowledge dissemination.

The World Book Day, which was introduced by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, is observed on April 23 every year by authors, illustrators and readers.

GITAM vice-chancellor G Subrahmanyam felt that books were the legacies of geniuses and ‘gifts’ to the posterity. They also play an important role in the life of nations and universities. Academic institutions should inculcate reading habit among students in the wake of internet era. The culture of tolerance should be promoted in the society, and writers must be given the liberty to write, he said. He also told the faculty to publish research programmes and apply for copyrights to protect intellectual rights.
