Doctors Seek Probe into Suspension

VIZIANAGARAM:Tension prevailed as doctors in large numbers boycotted duties and staged a protest against the suspension of a doctor of the Parvathipuram Area Hospital by the district collector in the town Saturday morning. The doctors said that they would continue the protests for three more days.

District collector MM Nayak suspended a doctor after the latter recommended shifting of a patient to Visakhapatnam. The patient died while undergoing treatment in Vizag.

The doctors alleged that the district collector had been taking disciplinary action against them for no fault of theirs.

They said that a pregnant woman from Kurupam mandal was brought to the Parvathipuram Area Hospital, where her condition turned serious.

The area hospital doctor therefore directed the family to take the woman to Visakhapatnam to ensure better treatment.

However, the pregnant woman died while undergoing treatment at Visakhapatnam.

Alleging that the woman died due to delayed treatment, the district collector suspended the doctor concerned.

The agitators said that despite meeting the collector and explaining the situation, he did not heed them and even insulted them apart from suspending the doctor. The doctors demanded an inquiry and said that action be initiated against the doctor in question only if he was found guilty.
