Water Crisis Stares Krishna Delta in Face

VIJAYAWADA:  Even as the government is taking steps to make sure that agriculture will record a double-digit growth this year, lack of water in Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichintala is causing concern to farmers in Krishna delta and they are not in a position to know when they can begin raising paddy nurseries.

Agriculture minister P Pulla Rao says there might be a little difficulty for release of adequate water to Krishna delta from Prakasam barrage but after August 15, the problem would ease as Pattiseema LI Scheme shall have been commissioned by then.

The minister says that till August 15, if there is enough rain the drains that open into the Krishna river would be pumping in huge volumes of water that could be used for agricultural operations. Though it has been decided to release some water from Pulichintala which has about 3 tmcft water now, a decision as to how much of it should be released would be taken after the arrival of the chief minister from Japan, he says.
