Cockfights, Betting: 17 Arrested

VISAKHAPATNAM/VIZIANAGARAM:Cockfight and betting seem not to have ended even 45 days after Sankranthi, as the Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram police arrested 17 people in two separate cases, Sunday evening.

The city task force (CTF) team led by inspector of police Syed Mohammed Eliyas raided a cockfight venue at Nammidoddi village near Pedagantyada of Gajuwaka area and took 10 people into custody while they were placing bets on the roosters. They also seized Rs 15,200 in cash, six motor bikes and six fighting roosters.

In another case, the Vizianagaram cops led by inspector of police Saluru Ramakrishna busted a cockfighting gang near S Sitaramapuram village in Ramabhadrapuram mandal Sunday. They arrested seven people and seized five fighting roosters, two bikes, three auto-rickshaws and Rs 4,600 in cash.

All the accused were arrested on the charges under Section (II) of AP Gambling Act. The seized roosters will be produced in the courts soon for auction.
