Cyclone-proof Cell Towers in the Making

VISAKHAPATNAM:“The technical teams have been planning for some latest technologies to be equipped to cell towers, primarily to withstand cyclones in the coastal areas,” said Sujit Sen, circle CEO of Indus Towers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He took part in a session of the company in a city hotel Thursday. He mentioned that the present equipment in cell towers could withstand winds up to 150 kmph, but the wind speed of Hudhud had crossed 200 kmph. Research studies were underway on equipment which could withstand 220-250 kmph winds, he said.

Commenting on the smart city aspect, Sujit Sen said, “Vizag is in the list of smart cities though the earmarkings have not been done. But if worked out, a smart city needs a tower for every 600 metres. Those are not actual usual cell towers, but ‘most modern smart towers’.”

On the Indus Towers company, he said that they had set up over 13,440 towers in the circle and provided jobs, directly or indirectly, to over 2,400 persons. He also explained the company’s measures for encouraging green projects.
