Women Attacked with Axe

VIJAYAWADA: In a shocking incident, unidentified miscreants attacked two women in Konduru village of Nandigama mandal in the wee hours of Monday with an axe and robbed them of jewellery worth `1 lakh. The condition of the victims who were admitted to a hospital in Vijayawada, is reported to be serious.

According to the Nandigama police, P Janaki (70) and her daughter-in-law P Lavanya (45) were staying at a rice mill owned by them on the outskirts of Konduru village. At around 1 am, two unidentified persons came on a motorcycle and forced their way into the mill.

They asked the two frightened women to part with the jewellery and cash in their possession. When Janaki refused, one of the miscreants attacked her with an axe he was carrying. She suffered a critical injury on the left side of her head. Then they attacked the other woman and robbed them of the jewelry they were wearing and fled. The attackers are said to be aged around 30 years.

The victims managed to go into the village and get help from villagers who alerted the police and took them to a nearby hospital and later to Vijayawada. A case has been registered.
