GVMC Officials Attacked

VISAKHAPATNAM: A building inspector of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and his assistant were assaulted by the residents of Vambay Colony under New Port Police Station limits of Gajuwaka area in the city Thursday afternoon.

Police said that building inspector O Venkateswara Rao and his assistant V Demudu were attacked with sticks and rods and were admitted to a private hospital at Gajuwaka with serious head injuries. Their condition is said to be stable.

According to sources, building inspector O Venkateswara Rao and his assistant V Demudu visited the Colony to identify and stop illegal constructions after receiving a tip-off from a reliable source.

Following a heated altercation with the residents, a group of about 12 people attacked them with sticks and iron rods.

Based on a complaint, New Port Police station CI G Srinivas registered cases against eight individuals and investigation is on. Srinivas said that one person named Kondala Rao has been taken into custody while others are reportedly absconding.
