VISAKHAPATNAM : City of Destiny is decked up for the three-day National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet (NID-JAM). Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will grace the event by the end of the first day, however no ministers from the centre will be attending. The district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the accommodation of players from 292 districts at various places, for whom screening tests have been conducted at one of its kind centre at Marikavalasa.
Meanwhile, chaos prevailed at few places, where athletes were not intimated about the screening tests. Athletes alleged that as they came late Thursday night they were unaware of the dope tests being conducted and also mentioned that the authorities did not intimate them about the tests earlier. However, officials reacted by the afternoon and managed to finish the screening tests for the candidates who had missed it earlier.
As many as 3,284 athletes apart from around 600 coaches from 292 districts across the country have reached the city. Both boys and girls of Under 14 category will play five games each while boys and girls in Under 16 category will play 10 games each, including 600 m run, 400 m run, long jump, high jump, etc.
The Port Outdoor Golden Jubilee Stadium was decked up with first ever eight-track lane, as well as two special short-put throw centre boards. Athletes gathered at the venue for special performance rehearsals and practice Friday.
Day one of the three-day event is going to host qualifying rounds. The first game in the event is going to be running leads of U-14 girls 600 metre, followed by U-14 long jump and others.
CM N Chandrababu Naidu and Sports minister K Atchannaidu will take part in a meet with the athletes after the end of the events of the first day, while HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, minister for Rural development Ch Ayyanapatrudu will take part in the opening ceremony Saturday morning.
The district administration has allotted Sri Chaitanya Boys hostel, Marikavalasa, Tribal Welfare College, Marikavalasa, Sri Chaitanya Womens hostel, RTC Complex, Vignan School, Thimmapuram, and Social Welfare Complex as accommodation for the athletes. They have been taken to the Tribal Welfare College at Marikavalasa, where the screening tests have been conducted.
The district administration, along with GVMC, has engaged committees for food, water, sanitation, transport, power supply and other facilities for the guests. Medical centres have been arranged at all the accommodation centres by the district health department. Around 80 local officers including MPDOs and other government staff of the district have been deployed as in-charge officers at all these venues.
