RAJAHMUNDRY: Travelling on the 130-km stretch of National Highway-16 in the district is quite an ordeal for the people. Till the end of August this year, 598 persons died in 1,689 road accidents and 2,900 were injured on the road.
In June this year, 22 persons died when a vehicle in which they were travelling, slid into River Godavari at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram.
Monday’s ghastly road accident on the NH-16 at Gandepalli village has 16 persons dead. this can be attributed to failure of the patrol parties. The main reason for the accidents are lack of police petrolling, over-loadning, bars along the NH and wrong parking along the road margins.
