VIJAYAWADA: In a major development, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to introduce free sand policy. Briefing newsmen about it on Friday night, ministers P Pulla Rao and P Narayana said the decision was taken to help expedite construction activity in the state to have better infrastructure in place.

“It was decided to allow sand to be taken for free from existing quarries, but no stocking of the sand will be allowed. Cases under Essential Commodities Act will be registered against anyone found hoarding the sand, which is illegal.

Modalities pertaining to the free sand policy will be announced on Monday,” Pulla Rao said.

He said a task force will be set up to prevent misuse of free sand policy.
