Crackdown begins, 32 schools locked up in city

VISAKHAPATNAM: A day after HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao ordered closure of 144 unrecognised schools, education officials on Monday locked up 32 schools being run in violation of the norms in the city. The raids will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday too.

District educational officer M Venkata Krishna Reddy who was pulled up by the minister over lax implementation of the norms, participated in the raid.

The DEO said that their team had raided as many as 32 schools in a few areas of the city and  locked them them. Managements closed seven schools voluntarily, he said. The DEO and his team attached posters at the schools, which read that the schools were closed for violating the norms. Students who came by buses were sent back by the officials and they were also told that the schools were unrecognised by the government.

Meanwhile, the taskforce team led by joint collector-II D Venkat Reddy is yet to start inspection of schools. The team will find out whether the schools are following  norms like having fire-fighting equipment, playground, building structure, toilets and other amenities, said the DEO.
