Attacked by spurned suitors, teen suffers broken spine

TIRUPATI: A teenaged girl is laid down in hospital with a broken spine that she suffered when two youths chased her on a bike, knocked her down and kicked her indiscriminately. But why?

The girl had spurned the advances of the two youths who wanted her to reciprocate their love. One of them approached her directly while the other met her parents and sought her hand in marriage. It is not clear if both of them knew the other was in love with her. But when they attacked, they did it together which, it is suspected, could be possible only when the two youths disclosed their rejection with each other and planned an attack together.

The incident took place on June 1 but came to light on Tuesday when the parents of the girl approached the media, pouring out their anguish over the police not arresting the culprits so far.

According to Alipiri sub-inspector P Rajakumar, the two youths, Naveen and Yashwanth, who are degree students in a private college in Tirupati, attacked the girl, a resident of Kanakabhushan Layout in Tirupati. The duo followed her on a bike and hit her scooter. The impact threw the girl off balance and landed her on the ground. The two youths got down from their bike, rushed to her and kicked her around, yelling at her that they would kill her right there.

Hearing the commotion, passersby rushed to her rescue. The assailants fled the scene.

The girl who suffered grievous injuries was shifted to the SV Ruia Government Hospital. Though she has since been discharged, she has to be taken to the hospital for treatment periodically, and will be bedridden for the next six months.

Her father Kasaiah, who is a private company employee, lodged a complaint with the traffic police when the attack took place but was  asked to approach the law and order police. On June 6, Alipiri circle inspector B V Srinivasulu registered a case against Naveen (Accused 1) and Yashwanth (Accused 2) under sections 354 (offence of sexual harassment), 354D (offence of stalking), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman).

Of the two youths, Naveen, is the son of constable working in APSP Battalion at Venkatagiri in Nellore district and is staying alone in Tirupati.

Yashwanth is a native of Tirumala whose father is a financier.

According to sources, the girl knew Naveen and was friendly with him for some time but of late she was keeping away as she was concentrating on relocating to Bengaluru to pursue fashion designing. Naveen, who was upset with her attitude, attacked her along with Yashwanth. As Naveen is the son of police constable, the police were initially reluctant to register a case against him. Since the other youth Yashwant's father is follower of a local MLA, the police did not 'look for him' either.
