Police pull down protest tent of Vamsadhara oustees

SRIKAKULAM: THE City Police on Monday pulled down the protest camp erected by the Left Parties near the collectorate here, demanding compensation for the Vamsadhara evictees in the likes of the rehabilitation package announced for Polavaram project oustees.  

The police dismantled the dharna camp and arrested the key leaders of the CPI(M) including district secretary B Krishna Murthy and state leader Chowdary Tejeswara Rao, for staging a protest without obtaining the prior permission from police.

Vamsadhara activists, with the support of Left Parties planned to stage the protest for 36 hours at a strecth, seeking housing land of five cents and `8.11 lakh for the construction of house, and maintenance charges for three years. The same package was offered to the Polavaram project oustees for its construction.

Vamsadhara activists decided to go on a protest after the recent negotiations made with the government, which announced a package of `5 lakh to Vamsadhara evictees have failed.

Krishna Murthy said that they would intensify the movement until the government announces the demanded package.
