When to worry about memory loss?

Is your child unable to recall and relate his day at school? Do you notice your child struggling to learn mathematics and science?

VIJAYAWADA: Is your child unable to recall and relate his day at school? Do you notice your child struggling to learn mathematics and science? Well, if it is the situation with your child, he may need proper medical attention to identify and treat the cause of his condition.

According to a study conducted by researchers, the human brain has many complex functions. Controlling memory is one vital function of the brain. Do you know that even children may suffer from short-term memory loss? If you are clueless about this, don’t get panic. Majority of the people in our society are still in a misconception that memory loss is a condition that can affect only adults.

It’s hard to imagine that children are finding it difficult to remember things that had just happened the previous day. But it does happen and there are reports claiming that memory problems are more and more often these days. The first sign of short-term memory loss is that your child cannot recall a particular event, person, place or thing that he/she should remember, even if you ask him/her repeatedly. Parents of kids with short-term memory loss require a lot of effort and care while dealing with him/her.

“Short-term memory problems in children involve their ability to pay sufficient attention to information and their ability to encode information in short-term memory properly,” says Vasundhara Majeti, child physician at Balya Hospitals.

Parents can teach children with short-term memory, the strategies designed to improve their concentration and memory power. Common methods include reading actively by taking notes and highlighting important words, and repeating new information and explaining what it means after you encounter it for the first time, she added.

Pollution affects kids’ memory, IQ
“Children living in cities with significant air pollution are at an increased risk of developing short-term memory loss and lower IQ,” says K Durga Prasad, a pediatrician at Sri Durga Chinnari Children’s Hospital in the city.
