VISAKHAPATNAM: The rape of a woman on a footpath in broad daylight and full public view at the New Railway Colony area here has sent shockwaves through the country.The gruesome incident that took place on Sunday was captured by some onlookers none of whom came forward to help the visibly weak woman.
According to police, the victim, aged more than 40 years, left her house in Chodavaram after a fight with her husband a month ago. She stayed at her mother’s house in Thatichetlapalem for a while, but left after a tiff. She has been sleeping on the roads of New Railway Colony for the last three days.
“The woman appears to have not eaten for days. She was lying in a semiconscious condition under a tree on the footpath when the drunk accused forced himself on her in full public view. Being weak, the woman could not resist,” said II-Town inspector GV Ramana.
The accused Ganji Shiva, 21, a lorry driver, previously served time at a juvenile home for stealing motorcycles. Cops said they suspect Shiva consumed ganja before the incident.
“We have collected the blood samples of the accused which will be sent to a forensic lab for testing,” said the inspector.The incident came to light after an auto-driver who was present at the scene of the crime captured the incident on his cellphone and posted it on the WhatsApp group of the City Police.
The video shows a man wearing a blue shirt and jeans forcing himself on the woman behind a tree even as a passerby walks past.
A few persons dialled the police and shouted at the accused but did not dare go near him fearing he would attack them.By the time the police reached the spot, the accused had left the place. The cops then shifted the woman to King George Hospital (KGH) .After collecting details from a few passersby, police took Shiva into custody and a case was registered in IV-Town Police Station.The accused was produced before a court on Monday and has been remanded in judicial custody.Doctors at King George Hospital said the woman was traumatised and was not in a condition to speak to anyone. However, they said she was recovering and her health condition was stable.
The rape that took place at New Railway Colony area, a busy spot in the city, was not captured by CCTV cameras in the location. Cops said trees blocked the view.
