BANGALORFE: They might have enough food for thought, but not many rural students of Bangalore University have one square meal a day.
Realising this, the university is planning to introduce brunch facilities for postgraduate students on the premises every working day at a nominal rate.
"Rural students, especially girls, tend to skip breakfast in a rush to reach college in time", said Dr N Prabhu Dev, BU vicechancellor, on Tuesday. "So, we have decided to offer them brunch on campus."
The feasibility of food being offered free of cost was explored initially and, according to Dev, "I was advised to collect a nominal amount, as the scheme might be misused by some."
Hence, hostel students won't avail the scheme as they get food in hostels.
The vicechancellor also revealed that a fourmember syndicate subcommittee has been formed to approach charitable institutions, such as the ISKCON, to implement the meal scheme.
"The ISKCON is high on our agenda as it is wellknown for its high standards in food", he said.
As part of its hostel expansion plans, the university has requested the Social Welfare Ministry to allocate `10crore to build three more blocks, comprising 200 rooms each.
"We have told the authorities concerned that we will offer our land for the same", said Dev.
